The town of Salem was chartered in December 1951.
Until that time, the area was part of older townships which were
developed in the early 1900s. The town owes much of its history to
Indian legend and heritage because of its location in the Jocassee and
Boone's Creek areas. In 1951, a group of citizens got together and
decided they would like to have a chartered town. After going through
the proper legal processes, Salem became incorporated. The meaning of
the town's name, City of Peace, comes from the Bible, according to town
residents, who said it comes from the last part of the city of
Jerusalem.
