Superbright LED Turn Signals

By John Ford

Here’s a project that is inexpensive, useful and fun.  This will allow you to turn those dim turn signals into ones that everyone can see.  The project calls for drilling a few holes, doing a little soldering, buying a couple of 120 ohm, 1/8 watt resistors from radio shack and  purchasing some “superbright LEDs”.  The superbright LEDs can be purchased at quite a few places, I got mine at www.superbrightleds.com .  The part number is RL5-W10015, they are called “super white LEDs and have an output of 10,000 mcd / 15 deg.”.  The part number is all you really need.  There are plenty of regular and superbright LEDs to choose from and they will all work.  I chose this particular superbright led because it is noticeably brighter than the others.  If you choose one of the other LEDs available, you will need to calculate the resistor values, as they will be different from mine.  It would be a mistake to purchase another LED and use the same value of resistors listed in this article.

If you have never built a circuit, don’t let that dissuade you.  If you’re handy with tools and spend time working on your Willys, you can do this, and it’s a whole lot cheaper than buying an LED turn signal light.

I modified just about everything on my Willys truck, so it’s a pretty good bet that I’m working on a different turn signal light than you will be.  The concept however, is the same.  Tapping into the wire for the turn signal.
